The Women of Russ Meyer
God bless Russ Meyer. I can only shudder at what a dreary humourless, void, the world would be without his contribution to cinema. If it were not for Russ Meyer’s countless odes to femininity, we would be devoid of the ample charms of Vera Satana, Kitten Navidad and Haji, three legends who are permanently etched in the psyches of men (and women) everywhere—they of the strong willed and mind, body and spirit that could seduce a man one moment and clobber him over the head with frying a pan the next. Yes, Meyer’s was breast obsessed, but then again so are a lot of us, hence the kernel of his genius.
It was with this mindset that I arranged to meet these women, to see how they faired in the celebrity obsessed world we reside in that endlessly gobbles up starlets by the second.
The women did not disappoint.
I arrived at Haji’s pad as planned, only to have her rush out to perform a quick task, a task that lasted more than four hours! Tura arrived on time, and we conducted a lovely leisurely interview; she still looks the part of Varla in Faster Pussycat, Kill! Kill!, a part that made her famous some three dozen years ago; Kitten was next and a fascinating mixture of sex appeal and insanity rolled up into one (making rude comments about me and my cameraman the entire time…we had to literally fight off her advances); and then there’s Haji; the extra terrestrial (literally! Haji believes she’s from another planet) who is shockingly down to earth.
To say that it was an amazing experience watching these women interact with one another would be an understatement. They chatted with unbridled candor about sex, Myers, sex, boyfriends, sex again…well, you get the point. They’re legends, that clear and simple.
As we were packaging to leave I asked for something I swore I would never do; I asked for a celebrity picture. The women all complied so what I have now are a series of spectacular photos that I now proudly display to my friends. Among them is an a lovely shot of me, on the ground as Tura Satana, with one foot on my back, and her two hands gripping mine as if to dislocate my entire being.. That recreation of the killing scene in Faster Pussycat, Kill Kill! means something very important to me: it means I can now die a happy man.
