VOYEURISM/EXHIBITIONISM - Episode 2-15

During the course of shooting part of the segment on exhibitionism, I confirmed that I'm definitely not one - an exhibitionist, that is. At least, not when it comes to performing bodily functions in front of a live audience. In the www.apartment21.com website, I actually came THIS close to going to the bathroom and having my actions broadcast to whoever happened to be viewing the website at that moment. Let me back up. In Apartment 21.com, three gay guys get to live rent-free in a New York City apartment in exchange for having their lives broadcast 24-hours a day over the Internet. After we finished the interviews, I needed to use the washroom and without thinking, I started to walk into their bathroom, but caught myself in the nick of time. We all had a good laugh about my close call and they told me a couple of their friends had actually followed through on what I had almost ended up doing. Then, they gave me a key to a washroom in the hall, assuring me that no cameras would catch me in the act of doing what comes naturally.

On the other hand, I must confess somewhat of a tendency towards voyeurism. I think it's kind of a prerequisite for working in television, where you're essentially peering into people's lives. The fellow we interviewed who edited a book on voyeurism had us all mesmerized with a tale of growing up in the Big Apple and having a clear view of what his neighbours in the apartment building across the street were doing, particularly one couple who made love with all the lights on and were clearly visible to anyone who chose to glance over. When it comes right down to it, given the opportunity, who wouldn't choose to watch a spectacle like that unfold before their eyes? I believe most people would be compelled to look, especially if it's something you're maybe not supposed to be watching.
