FEMINIST PORN - episode 2-18
I expressed a strong interest in producing a story on "feminist porn" early on in the show's history;
I have to admit it was mostly for selfish reasons. I like porn in principle, but I find most commercial, male- produced porn insanely boring. I'm always looking for porn that manages to avoid the typical traps that most porn falls into; the brutal dialogue, soap opera sets, the predictable scenarios, and the mechanical sex. I thought that women-produced porn might present sex differently, and I wanted to look into it. For most people the term "feminist porn" is a complete oxymoron. The porn industry is generally
considered to be a misogynistic world, basically built on the backs of women. The idea that a woman
might choose to be in porn, and like it, seems inconceivable to a lot of folks. In person, I found the women who produce, direct, and act in, feminist porn to be (for the most part) strong and self-assured. Personally, I find some of the work sort of uninspiring, but I don't doubt their earnestness in trying to produce images and scenarios that are fundamentally different from those of male pornographers. For the most part the women in the "feminist porn" videos appear to be more empowered, and I think it's a direct result of the fact that the filmmakers themselves are empowered. I interviewed Annie Sprinkle when she was in the midst of editing her art-porn film "Herstory Of Porn." She and editor/co-director Scarlot Harlot had edited the video continuously for about 5 hours, and would continue to do so after I conducted my interview. At one point, while we were taking down the lights and wrapping up the interview, Scarlot put an art- porn film ("The Operation") in the VCR. Annie had never seen this video and was transfixed by it. She proceeded to moan loudly, and utter such comments as, "oh, that's really hard to do' , "that's hot" , "such good chemistry".
It impressed me that someone who had spent the whole day looking at nothing but porn could become so openly excited by one more sex scene. She genuinely loves porn. She said to me at one point, "Porn is my life's work, I don't know, I'm just lucky". Pedro Orrego
