TASTE THIS - episode 2-18
It's always a little hard to say how you feel about a story the weekend after production. To a certain extent, 'Taste This' was one of the hardest stories I have ever put together. Each of the five members of the group had such compelling personal histories and unique talents that I would have loved to have gone into great detail with each individual. Alas, I had to tackle the daunting task of reducing over 6 hours of footage to create a 7-minute story. As I sat for hours, listening and writing out the intimate details of these women's personal stories of childhood, trauma, ecstasy and love, I found that something within me awoke. These women's stories - these women who were complete strangers - went to the heart of some of the emotional baggage I didn't even know I was carrying from my experiences of growing up as a woman. What is this thing called 'female'? What is 'beauty'? What does it mean to be a good girl or a bad girl? What happens when biology is the only connection you have to the word 'woman'? Even though these questions have been asked for years, this was the first time I had heard it through the voices and experiences of women I could truly relate to. Their stories are inspiring beyond words. Let me end by saying that I recently found out that after 4 years of touring around Canada and the U.S., 'Taste This' has disbanded. Although 'Taste This' will not be around anymore, I suspect that these women will continue to challenge the boundaries and limitations of gender in whatever they choose to do in the future. I know that they have inspired at least one 'girl' to do some challenging of her own. Cynthia Loyst
