CARIBBEAN SEX TOURISM - episode 2-22
According to anthropologist Klaus de Albuquerque, female sex tourism in the Caribbean has existed since the beginning of the 20th Century. Older white North Americans women would spend winters in Bermuda, the Bahamas, and The Virgin Islands, and hire young black males to service them for the duration of their stay. Today, thousands of women fly to the Caribbean "in search of the Big Bamboo", (as one popular calypso song puts it) and young men, desperate for work, are more than happy to charm and service them.
Among the "beach boys" of Martinique, Air Canada is known as "Air Pussy", because it is chock full of potential clients. "Rent-A-Dreads" are fixtures in Jamaican tourist beaches and bars. These men are part of the foreign women's holiday package, and the women are important part of the men's earnings. The problem with shooting this story was that the men would never admit to being "gigolos" ( which is essentially what they are) because if they did, it would kill the fantasy they play out for their clients. This is the fantasy of the wild, virile, untamed "well-hung", young man who is hopelessly drawn to the (often middle aged) foreigner, and falls madly in love with her. It's a fantasy that the man and the woman indulge in for the week or two, for completely different reasons. Pedro Orrego
