RETRO RAUNCH - episode 3-07
I'm certainly not the first (nor will I be the last) to say that much of pornography today is lacking a little something. Flipping through this month's Playboy magazine I wondered,… "who makes this shit?" And more to the point, "who the hell finds this erotic?" Haven't we had enough of playing the voyeur for the woman writhing around on a beach, the woman at the ski chalet, the woman in the tub….is there nothing new to explore? To me, the most obvious thing most pornography lacks (and I think I speak for many women here) is a sense of subtleness and honesty. There is a harshness and 'naughtiness' inherent in current "erotica" that ranges from the banal to the downright offensive. While doing this story, I came across a dealer in paper ephemera who happened to have several vintage postcards. As I snatched up three beautiful shots of a woman wearing nothing but her smile, I recognized the sense of playfulness and sweetness that doesn't exist today. Staring at the image of this woman staring back at me, I found it somewhat ironic that a woman who lived pre-feminism, is more in control of "the gaze" than most women are today… Cynthia Loyst
