We've all done it.

We've sat in front of the TV set late at night, as the rest of our family slumbered, trying to catch a fleeting glimpse of a juicy sex scene in the scrambled porn channel. Mostly, it's a frustrating experience. It often seems the badly acted filler scenes are left untouched, and as soon as it gets to the nitty gritty, the images are stretched & warped in an insane show of vibrant colours. Most of us pack it in and go to bed irritated and unfulfilled.

Kolin Smith has managed to turn this annoying source of frustration, into art. He finds beauty in the way the scrambling distorts the human body, and he loves the electric colours. He also shows us the inherent eroticism in "Picasso porn" (the porn industry's term for the scrambling of their work). Our eye is too slow to catch the sensuous curves of colour, as they blend with the fragments of a woman's torso. Kolin's camera captures these distortions, and his images make these run of the mill sex acts hotter and more mysterious.

These days it's getting harder and harder for Kolin to produce his beautiful images. Many Picasso porn channels are blue screened, because the contorted images are considered too provocative. The locale where he produced most of his work no longer gets scrambled porn. As Kolin says, "this work definitely has its statements about the social barriers America has about sex. It's so secretive. It's so ridiculous that sex upsets so many people, that t.v. channels can't entice you with a few clear minutes of it at a time."
