THE WAGES OF SIN - Episode 3-11

Before reading "Wages Of Sin", I was under the impression that epidemics are only about germs and microbes. In fact, there is a lot more involved. Since the Middle Ages, diseases associated with sex have been considered acts of divine retribution, and those afflicted have been considered sinners. Diseased people have been Shunned, and often left to suffer without treatment, because of our culture's attitudes towards sexuality, sin, and disease.

Peter Allen, was personally affected by this issue, when his lover contracted Aids in the early 1980's. He became acutely aware of the fact that in the eyes of many, across the nation and in Capitol Hill, Aids was a punishment God had brought down on a group of sinners. After his lover died, Peter dealt with his pain by writing "Wages of Sin".

Peter was a joy to interview. He was remarkably articulate, and I truly admired his attention to detail, and his willingness to tell me his painful personal story. After we finished shooting, I was shocked to find out that I was the only one to ever interview him on this subject. I sincerely hope others will talk to him in the future. His is an important story to tell.
