SAR - Episode 3-13
I'm asked sometimes by viewers, friends or associates; "Why don't you produce more sexy stories?" My answer is that we do produce sexy stories (how can you beat our 1/2 special, 'Breast Obsessed'?), but I also feel it's important to adequately represent the gamut of human sexuality, and that sometimes includes topics that are horrific (Rape in South Africa), under-reported (Intersexuality) and in the case of this story, uncomfortable for some.
SAR is a Dutch organization that facilitates prostitute visits to individuals who have mental and/or physical disabilities throughout The Netherlands. Now a story on prostitution unto itself is palatable to many people because they might see some hot streetwalkers in 6-inch pumps and push-up bras. But a story on sex and the disabled? This makes many people a little uneasy.
It's difficult for many people to even consider issues that surround disability, and it's equally hard for some to talk about sex, but combine the two issues, and you have a really unsexy story. But wait? What exactly is unsexy about it? We're talking about individuals who are truly no different than us able-bodies folks except for the fact that they perhaps can't walk, hold a cup, or until now, have access to sex.
The disabled gentleman in my story, Ad Kaandorp is an example of this. Ad has been 'spastic' his entire life, but has until recently lead a normal existence. He has been married, lived in his own house for most of his adult life and been mostly autonomous and self-sufficient. But ultimately his marriage ended and seven years ago, Ad fell and broke his neck, which rendered him quadriplegic, unable to use his legs or fully utilize his arms and hands. The accident however did not affect his sex-drive or desire for sexual interaction with women, but did land him squarely in Amstelrade, a residence for the disabled. Not only does Ad not have a partner or a girlfriend, but also because of his accident, he is unable to even masturbate. He would have absolutely no outlet for his sexual desires if it were not for the SAR organization.
Ad is visited twice a month by a sex-worker from SAR and has sex with her. They engage in foreplay, oral sex, penetration and most importantly…intimacy. The incredible thing about this story is that the Dutch Government actually pays for this service (one visit monthly, Ad pays for the second himself). They see it as a social service that is necessary for their population of people with disabilities. What a country!
If this story makes you uncomfortable or sad, then fine. Perhaps it will in some small way contribute to better understanding the obstacles that those with disabilities face and will nurture tolerance and ultimately action. But will I ever see the day when an organization like SAR could exist in Canada or the U.S.?
Not bloody likely.
