"The mainstream porn world is like McDonalds, they serve the same crappy burger all the time, and sure it's yucky and devoid of nutritional value, but people are hungry - so they eat it," says Farrell Timlake, president of Homegrown video the oldest and most influential amateur porn company in the world. "Amateur porn is served in small town restaurants where people use fresh ingredients. You get the best meat in your burger, you say hi to the butcher, and always receive personal attention." Farrell is still completely idealistic about what he does. "I believe that sex is the true sixth sense," he says. "It's the principle that exists through all living things…you can understand the blooming of a flower because you can understand sex and creation."
Far out? Yes… but absolutely sincere. Before getting into the amateur porn business,
Farrell and his wife of 16 years followed the Grateful Dead fulltime. "We started sending our sex tapes to Homegrown video to get a little extra bread to follow "the Dead."
After nobody bought our videos for a while, we realized that the company was going bankrupt. We borrowed money from my mom and bought a porn company." Farrell brought his hippie sensibility to Homegrown video and believes that he is part of a community of idealistic and exhibitionistic hedonists. While I don't think all amateur pornographers are as idealistic about what they do as Farrell is, I do think they are conscious of producing stuff that is more realistic than the formulaic and robotic porn that comes from the San Fernando valley. The homegrown pornographers I talked to stressed the importance of fun and spontaneity when making a video. They also considered it essential to record the female orgasm, a practice that is sadly absent in most mainstream porn. "Real orgasms, real sex is what the audience wants to see…it's something that can't be faked," says John an amateur pornographer and creator of the website 'Deb's room.' "Amateur porn is growing, and it's coming from a neighbourhood near you," concludes Farrell, "it's porn by the people, for the people." Pedro Orrego
