THE HAPPY HOOKER - episode 3-19
One of the most fascinating parts of my job is the ability to seek out and eventually meet infamous people in the world of sex (like Screw Magazine founder Al Goldstein, and porn legends Ron Jeremy, Marilyn Chambers, and Jenna Jameson). Now I can add Xaviera Hollander to the list…otherwise known as The Happy Hooker. Xaviera rose to public prominence in the early 1970's with the publication of her tell-all book The Happy Hooker. It documented her tumultuous years in New York City, working first as a high-end call-girl, and eventually as the highest profile Madame in New York. 30 years later, we discovered that she was living back in her native Netherlands, in Amsterdam. I thought it would be interesting to meet up with her, present-day, and see how The Happy Hooker has aged. She's now 57 years old, has silvery gray hair and has a slight gait in her step, but two things have remained the same…her striking, piercing eyes, and her love of money. 30 years ago Xaviera sold her body, now she sells the theatre. She runs a home-theatre operation out of her sizeable home in Amsterdam where she presents English-Language productions and over-priced beef stew. She not only charged us the price of admission to shoot with her there, but she charged us double. She also commanded the highest interview fee of anyone that's ever appeared on SexTV (we've had people actually having sex on the show for less). But I guess it's about supply and demand. After all, there's only one Happy Hooker, and she knew we traveled 3000 miles to meet her. We weren't about to give it up for the sake of a few hundred dollars. I guess I felt like she was giving me only what was necessary…nothing more. I suspect that she was somewhat more selfless when she was selling her body for a living. But her persona and acts of love remain truly legendary; and I guess that's enough.
