SOUTHERN COMFORT - Episode 3-21

"Southern Comfort" is a documentary that tells the touching story of Robert Eads, a female-to-male transexual dying of ovarian cancer. The film takes place during the last year of Robert's life, during which he falls in love with a female-to-male transexual named Lola Cola.

If you've seen the film - you already know how amazing it is. If you haven't - get out and see it as soon as possible.

It was wonderful to speak with the creator, Kate Davis while on a recent trip to New York. Her dedication and sensitivity made her the perfect person to create the film. I also had the privilege of meeting Lola while she was in Toronto for the Hot Docs! Festival.

One of the things that struck me as I spoke with Lola, was not only her immense love and respect for Robert, but also her incredible charm and intelligence. I found it interesting that in the film, some of Robert's friends expressed concern over his relationship to Lola. They felt that Lola was somewhat superficial and not very bright. It seemed that perhaps Lola has truly transformed into the strong, vivacious woman Robert always saw in her.

While Robert was alive, he reached out to those around him with his patience, kindness and forgiveness. Through his death, he has been able to touch the hearts of thousands of people.
